Matera's extraordinary transformation into a hub for aerospace and scientific dissemination is no accident, but the result of a strategic vision born a long time ago. Today's SPARKme Space Academy draws its strength from the partnership that the lead company, Openet, has forged over the years with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Originally conceived as a technology accelerator to transfer satellite data and space solutions into everyday life, the SPARKme project is now experiencing an extraordinary scientific, cultural, and educational evolution.
The hub's current developments are reflected in the permanent hosting of "Time Machines," the renowned and spectacular interactive and immersive exhibition of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). After attracting large audiences in Rome and Turin, the exhibition is now permanently established in Basilicata, offering an inclusive 360-degree experience featuring solar system reproductions, multimedia areas, and black hole simulations. This synergy between research, institutions, and private initiative was welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Edmondo Cirielli, who attended the inauguration. In a year in which Matera shines as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Merit, the academy confirms its position as a unique European center of excellence, already captivating over 7,000 students and demonstrating that Southern Italy can play a leading role on the path to the future of the cosmos.
