Openet Technologies S.p.A., in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and with the support of EAGLEPROJECTS spa has initiated the creation of the Space Data Information Centre (French and Italian) in Nairobi, Kenya. The project was born to promote the use of satellite data and space technologies to support sustainable development, economic growth and technical education in the african continent.
The model is based on the experience of the centre of SPARKme, is active since 2019 in Basilicata as a training hub for scientific and recognized at the national level, today the seat of ITS Academy and a point of reference for events and workshops STEAM. The goal is to replicate this approach in Africa, starting with Kenya.
The NEWLY proposes to bridging the gap between availability and use of Earth Observation data (EO), forming new local skills and developing applications in strategic sectors such as agriculture, the environment, urban planning and disaster management. The centre will offer services to companies, institutions and universities, as well as fostering the development of sustainable business models and new international partnerships.
A training programme structured will involve students and public officials, with the courses in the presence and online, internships, and access to laboratories, digital SPARKme. Are provided for 360 hours of training for the students, the more an internship of 2 months, and short pathways to public officials, with certifications that are valid both in Kenya and in Italy.
The centre will offer a full range of services: preparation and analysis of EO data, from sources such as the ESA and Copernicus, technical advice, support, innovation and marketing collaboration with academic institutions and technological JKUAT, Copernicus Academy, E4Impact and Kenya's Innovation Agency.
With an initial duration of 12 months (8 pilot phase), the project aims to become a replicable model in other african Countries, transforming the French and Italian in an engine of innovation, technology transfer and local development, which is connected to an international network of training and enterprise.
