Lucanian Aerospace Leads the Way in Africa: SDIC Center Launches in Nairobi

Openet Technologies S.p.A., in collaboration with Eagleprojects S.p.A., announces the establishment of the new Space Data Information Center (SDIC) in Nairobi, Kenya. This initiative marks an important step forward in the internationalization of Basilicata's aerospace expertise, with the aim of promoting the strategic use of space technologies and Earth observation data for sustainable development and innovation in developing countries.
The SDIC will serve as a regional hub for the management, analysis, and dissemination of satellite data, as well as a training center for students and public officials. The facility will be a key hub in building the local space economy, integrating with the training offerings of the SParkMe Space Academy in Matera and the ITS Academy Basilicata.
The project is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), with a total investment of 2 million euros.
“This confirms,” underlines Filomena Cuccarese, Director of Openet Technologies, “that the technologies and skills developed in Basilicata can also be of value for developing countries.”
During the pilot phase, a multidisciplinary technical program will be launched, which includes training in advanced technologies: Earth observation, IoT, GNSS sensors, satellite communication, and drones. The project will also include the creation of a Digital Twin and remote access to the Italian laboratories of the SParkMe Space Academy and ITS Basilicata. With this initiative, Openet Technologies strengthens its role in the international space innovation landscape, combining skills, infrastructure, and strategic vision to address global challenges.
